New Zealand opener Hamish Rutherford belted 84 off 43 balls for Essex as they cruised to a seven-wicket Twenty20 cricket win over Sussex in Hove.

Essex won with 17 balls to spare, notching up their fifth win from eight games to ease up the South Group ladder into second place behind Hampshire 12ax7.

Rutherford hoisted five sixes and nine fours, showing no mercy on any of Essex's seven bowlers.

Chasing Essex's modest 146-8, Rutherford and opening partner Greg Smith were more than halfway to their target after the six-over powerplay at 78 without loss personalized clothing labels.

Smith fell for 42 in the 12th over, smartly stumped by debutant wicketkeeper Callum Jackson, but it was a rare moment of relief for Sussex, the pre-tournament favourites who have won just one of their eight matches.

Rutherford, looking particularly comfortable on the offside, steered Essex to within 13 runs of victory before he was stumped by Jackson off leg spinner Will Beer in the 14th over Office chair.
